Lincoln Park’s iconic Irish pub, River Shannon, is celebrating 70 years of good times and kindred spirits with festivities that include food and drink specials, contests and prizes for patrons – including a year’s worth of freebies from River Shannon, an Apple iPad and trip to Ireland. Open to the public, the party takes place at 425 West Armitage on Sunday, August 14 from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. Raffle tickets for the Ireland get-away can be purchased in advance at the pub, with all proceeds benefitting The TLC Foundation to research on often-overlooked and debilitating repetitive behavior disorders. $1 for every drink sold from 5 p.m. on.
“For seven decades, River Shannon has lived by the number one rule of Irish hospitality: ‘you’re a guest on your first night; after that, you’re a regular’”, says Lynn McKinney, owner of the pub and Chicago’s Lodge Management Group. “We are thrilled to be celebrating this milestone with the neighborhood and the pub’s loyal patrons, and are happy to share the love by supporting The TLC Foundation.”
Opening its doors in 1946, River Shannon is the proud owner of Chicago’s 28th liquor license. To celebrate their place in Chicago history, River Shannon is looking for people who can name the owners of the 27 licenses that preceded theirs. The person who accurately identifies the most license holders wins 365 six-dollar River Shannon gift certificates – good for food and beverage every day for a year!). The pub is also celebrating with a nostalgic nod to the decade of its birth – an Apple iPad will be awarded to the guest wearing the best 1940s-themed attire. In addition, there will be bagpipe music and a re-christening ceremony with water from the actual River Shannon led by members of The Cloherty family, the pub’s original owners.
Corned beef sandwiches and more will be served from a Vienna Beef cart. Drink specials include $5 Guinness, Jameson, Tullamore Dew, Baileys, and Car Bombs.
