Maine Meals: National Lobster Day

There are a handful of things that come to mind when you think of New England. The Kennedys; the Ivy League; Tom Brady, if you’re into the rugged, gallant type; and, perhaps above all else, we have New England to thank for the most decadent crustacean available on menus.

Maine in particular is home to some of the world’s most delicious lobster, and the beginning of the harvest season has commenced. Early-summer through late-fall is a special time for Maine lobsters. Just before the peak season washes upon us, they shed their shells and grow new, presenting us with the sweet flavor of the Maine New Shell lobster.

It’s this exemplary delicacy’s deep-rooted history of sustainability and multigenerational family lobstermen that made New England senators again establish September 25 as National Lobster Day. The half-a-billion-dollar-a-year fishery is certified as sustainable by numerous global sustainability organizations, and its 150-year conservation history makes it such a cultural culinary cornerstone and dominant economic force in New England. Its prestigious place on menus continues to trickle down to the rest of the country, just as so many influences from the area have.

A few years ago, a group of lobster fishermen, dealers and other industry veterans coalesced to implement the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative, a group whose objective is celebrating and promoting the importance of this self-regulated family-affair industry. “Our goal is to increase awareness and demand for Maine Lobster,” said Matt Jacobson, executive director of MLMC. “We try to engage culinary professionals to believe in Maine Lobster and Maine New Shell Lobster.”
