Virginia Distillery Company’s Virginia-Highland Whisky Enters Illinois

Virginia Distillery Company, an American single malt whisky distillery nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Lovingston, Virginia, announced today that its award-winning flagship whisky Virginia Highland Malt is now available in a number of restaurants, bars and liquor stores throughout the state of Illinois.

Virginia Distillery Company’s flagship Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky is made from 100% malted barley and showcases both Old and New World whisky-making. Whisky from Scotland is married with whisky produced at the distillery in Central Virginia. Finishing in casks sourced primarily from Virginia for an additional six to eighteen months creates notes of rich dried fruit, toffee and dark cocoa.

Virginia Distillery Company has been honored with several awards including Best American Single Malt Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards, a 92-point rating from Wine Enthusiast Magazine and gold from both the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the American Craft Spirits Association.

Another whisky that will be available from Virginia Distillery Company in Illinois is the Chardonnay Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky, the latest release in the distillery’s Commonwealth Collection. This series features unique finishes through partnerships with Virginia wineries, cideries and breweries.

The Chardonnay Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky rested for an average of 18 months in finishing casks from Grace Estate Winery, Michael Shaps Virginia Wineworks and Paradise Springs Wineworks.  Each partner barrel brings nuance and complexity to the whisky, with notes of honeysuckle, green apple, lemon and caramel on the nose. Hints of pear and toasted pecans add intrigue on the palate, finishing with a soft vanilla creaminess. The 750 ml bottle retails for $64.59 plus tax and 210 cases were produced.

The distillery is currently crafting an American Single Malt at the distillery, made from 100% malted barley and aged in ex-bourbon, Sherry and re-toasted wine casks that have been resting since 2015. At the distillery, Virginia Distillery Company offers the Virginia Whisky Experience where guests can learn about the history of single malt whisky in Scotland, as well as in Virginia.  The guided tour starts in the distillery’s whisky museum, and while on the tour guests also visit the distillery and cask house and enjoy a tasting.

The late Dr. George G. Moore wanted to make Virginia Distillery Company a reality in order to share his passion for superbly crafted American made malt whisky and to do so in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.
